Custom license plates have become more popular over the past decade. Every State allows vehicle owners to request a custom license plate or also sometimes known as vanity plates. Each state has certain restrictions applied to ordering a customized plate. Some states have a limitation on maximum amount of characters allowed. A person can find this out with their state department of transportation or department of motor vehicles. There is usually a higher fee for custom plates as opposed to regular state issued plates. Also there are special rules in place on what type of content maybe be placed on plates. This is what they call in most states a “blue list”. Every state will review your customized plate request and look for vulgarity or other offensive number/letter combinations or phrases. So what is the popularity with vanity plates? Most of the time it is an extension of ones personality. Sometimes if you look at certain vanity plates, you may see a short hint about something that pertains to the vehicle owner. People may have a phrase or an abbreviated word that may reflect how they feel about themselves. Some people may express something about their favorite sport team. Others may have something that refers to their vehicle. Some vanity plates are very simple. Some are very funny. Some are very creative with a combination of letters and numbers.
