There are basically two types of speedometers. One is mechanical and the other is electrical. Either model is fine, but each will have different calibration issues. If you need to check or change your speedometer, it’s important that you work with someone who understands the difference.
For example, mechanical speedometers use flexible cable that rotates a wheel and axle gear which will spin a magnet and electromagnetically interact with the metal disk that has the needle attached to it. Making sure this type of component is working right is a completely different task from calibrating one that works differently.
The electrical speedometers on the market will usually use a rotation sensor to discern the actual speed. They use electrical pulses that correspond to the rotational speed of the driveshaft and are processed by a computer to deliver the actual speed of the car. These can use both digital and analog readouts.
The common instrument panels available today will offer a full range of devices that will display the necessary information to properly operate a vehicle. In other words, you need to pay attention to the warning lights that light up, and you need to react to them according. This necessarily implies that you can trust these lights are only coming on when there really is a problem.
If you find yourself in a situation that requires the removal of an instrument panel from the dashboard, you need to be extremely careful. Don’t disconnect the wrong things and make sure you don’t break anything that may be critical to the ongoing performance of your vehicle.
Always keep an eye on the components of your instrument panel. Whether it’s the speedometers, gas level gauges, engine temp indicators, or anything else, maintaining the condition of your vehicle is dependent on the performance of these devices.
