There is a trend that is happening around the country. Many states are now offering a lot of alternatives to the standard license plates that are offered for car owners. Many states now offer a custom license plate program. Many states have a special license plates that are offered and used to raise funds for special projects in the state. For instance, in Maryland you can pay a fee and get a Chesapeake Bay license plate. The funds from the purchase of those plates go to support efforts to preserve the Chesapeake Bay. There are similar programs in other states that go toward environmental programs and other state programs as well. But there are also now custom license plate programs available too. In most states you can get a plate with a specific name or phrase on the plate. They call these license plates vanity plates. Many also offer plates that are customized for specific groups. The groups that are included in the custom license plate programs include a wide variety of different groups such as military groups, sports teams, and civic organizations. Getting customized plates is not cheap though. There is a fee associated with the custom license plate programs. The fees vary through a range of prices. The custom license plate programs are very similar to the special license plate programs. The custom plate programs raise revenues for the state but the difference is that the custom license plate fees are not designated to a specific fund or project. Each state has a specific set of rules governing their license plate programs that is generally set by the state legislatures. If a person is interested in obtaining a custom or vanity plate they can check with their state DMV’s for information.
